Definition and Characteristics of IoT

In this article we discuss Definition and Characteristics of IoT. But There is no universal definition of IoT yet and no one can see everything that the Internet of Things will effectively mean on the longer term. Please visit my previous article where I have been published some definitions of IoT. These definitions given by some famous institute or Tech organization.

Definitions

The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a system of interrelated, internet-connected objects that are able to collect and transfer data over a wireless network without human intervention.

The personal or business possibilities are endless. A ‘thing’ can refer to a connected medical device, a biochip transponder (think livestock), a solar panel, a connected automobile with sensors that alert the driver to a myriad of possible issues (fuel, tire pressure, needed maintenance, and more) or any object, outfitted with sensors, that has the ability to gather and transfer data over a network.

Today, businesses are motivated by IoT and the prospects of increasing revenue, reducing operating costs, and improving efficiencies. Businesses also are driven by a need for regulatory compliance. Regardless of the reasons, IoT device deployments provide the data and insights necessary to streamline workflows, visualize usage patterns, automate processes, meet compliance requirements, and compete more effectively in a changing business environment. – by Aeris

The Internet of things (IoT) is the extension of Internet connectivity into physical devices and everyday objects. Embedded with electronics, Internet connectivity, and other forms of hardware (such as sensors), these devices can communicate and interact with others over the Internet, and they can be remotely monitored and controlled.

The definition of the Internet of things has evolved due to the convergence of multiple technologies, real-time analytics, machine learning, commodity sensors, and embedded systems. Traditional fields of embedded systems, wireless sensor networks, control systems, automation (including home and building automation), and others all contribute to enabling the Internet of things. In the consumer market, IoT technology is most synonymous with products pertaining to the concept of the “smart home”, covering devices and appliances (such as lighting fixtures, thermostats, home security systems and cameras, and other home appliances) that support one or more common ecosystems, and can be controlled via devices associated with that ecosystem, such as smartphones and smart speakers. – By Wikipedia

Internet of things (IoT) provides IP connectivity to various Things apart from general Desktops, Laptops and Mobile Devices. The term “things” means any physical parameter that could be sensed and connected to Internet. For example a device monitoring temperature and humidity at certain location and relaying the data will become a “thing’” in IoT domain.

Internet of things is a connecting bridge between physical world and cyber world and Machine to Machine communication i.e. without human intervention is one of the subset of it. IoT Refers to uniquely identifiable objects and their virtual representations in an Internet like structure. IoT all together a new environment in which current Internet will be smartly utilized by all new range of embedded connected things.

Sensors are the building blocks of Internet of things which can collect parameters and low power wireless embedded systems transmit information to gateway devices. Gateway device will make the parameters available over internet so that parameters are globally accessible. Till now there is no dedicated network stack defined for IoT, as it is a heterogeneous network of networks. The most popular protocols used for realization of IoT are Zigbee and 6lowPAN (IEEE 802.15.4), Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. – By CDAC INDIA

Characteristics of IoT

Dynamic and Self-Adapting : IoT enabled devices or systems may have the capability to dynamically adapt with the changing contexts and take actions based on their operating conditions, user’s context, or sensed environment.

Self-Configuring : IoT System may have self-configuring capability, allowing a large no. of devices to work together to provide certain functionality . These devices able to setup the networking, configure themselves or fetch latest software/firmware updates with minimal human intervention.

Interoperable Communication Protocols : IoT system may support a number of interoperable communication protocols and can communicate with other devices and also with the infrastructure.

Unique Identity : Every device has a unique identifier or unique identity. This unique identity can be IP address or URI.  IoT system may have intelligent interface which adapt based on the context, Device works and communicate according to conditions or environmental context.

Integrated into Information Network : IoT system are usally integrated into the informayion network that allows communication. Help of Communication we share data between devices or servers. Devices can be dynamically discovered in the network by other devices.

Summary

There is no universal definition of IoT yet and no one can see everything that the Internet of Things will effectively mean on the longer term. But we in the way we can say ” The Internet of Things (IoT) refers to a system of interrelated, internet-connected objects that are able to collect and transfer data over a wireless network without human intervention.
