Plastimo to use Sigfox and Eutelsat for life jacket tracking

Plastimo, a major international player in the boating industry, and Sigfox, the world’s leading IoT service provider and first global 0G network operator, have joined forces to offer total geolocation coverage across all oceans from 2020. The new service will be supported by data from the ELO nano-satellite constellation, operated by Eutelsat, Sigfox’s partner.

Basically The new products use Sigfox’s 0G network which is a low-bandwidth wireless network designed to send/receive small messages between Internet of Things (IoT) devices, thereby improving and broadening the application of digital technologies integrated into Plastimo’s safety equipment, with a specific requirement to quickly and reliably locate seafarers in the ocean.

With more than 50 years of industrial expertise in the manufacture and design of safety equipment for boating consumers and professionals, Plastimo is constantly searching for high-performance and innovative solutions. Plastimo turned to Sigfox’s 0G network to improve and broaden the application of digital technologies integrated into its safety equipment, with a specific requirement to quickly and reliably locate seafarers in the ocean.

One of the major advantages of the ELO constellation is that it uses the Sigfox protocol already available in more than 65 countries. The life jackets produced by Plastimo will be supported by either Sigfox’s terrestrial network or its satellite network. Thus, life jackets can be located several tens of kilometers from the coasts of the many countries already covered by the Sigfox terrestrial network, before the ELO constellation is available. The first two nanosatellites will be operational in 2020.

Plastimo claims that its future life jackets will be equipped with Sigfox satellite connectivity that will be easily locatable across all oceans. The vests will be quite comfortable and efficient and the new connectivity will be simple to use and will not require heavy and heavy batteries for maintaining power.
