The new year came and we were shoved in an unknown world. The coronavirus outbreak changed our outlook on multiple things and forced us to adapt to the new reality. While multiple economies are gradually reopening, they are keeping an eye on the changing dynamics in order to acclimatize accordingly.

The future has never been so uncertain. Due to the pandemic, the most mundane tasks have moved to the digital world and people are adjusting to this “new normal”. Working from home is one of the biggest challenges people are facing, adapting to remote offices is a momentous step. People have to ensure there is no compromise in quality, there are no miscommunication, etc. It is basically an unchartered territory hence it is quite understandable that some underlying technology issues have arisen.

In the following article, I will be addressing the top most discussed tech issues in 2020.

Data Security

Since businesses have moved to the digital realm along with other facets of daily life, their data is now vulnerable to cyberattacks. Businesses now have to be extremely cautious in the detection and prevention of these malicious threats.

According to Cyber Observers, damage related to cybercrime is projected to hit $6 trillion annually by 2021. It has been reported that about 68% of business leaders feel their cybersecurity risks are increasing. The data breaches exposed 4.1 billion records in the first half of 2019 (RiskBased). While 71% of breaches were financially motivated and 25% were motivated by espionage. (Verizon). Moreover, 52% of breaches featured hacking, 28% involved malware and 32–33% included phishing or social engineering, respectively. (Verizon)

These attacks have targeted and damaged multiple industries since businesses are still adapting to working remotely, they have not fully learned how to protect their information in an effective manner.

Phishing attacks, malspams and ransomware attacks are disguised as legitimate applications related to Covid-19 are the most used form of cyber-attack, this does not only disrupt the company but the users as well.

In order to limit these attacks, it has been suggested that the cyber-attack laws should be strengthened.

Data Backup and Recovery

Working remotely means you need to store and save loads of vital information in order to keep the business moving hence data backup is a top priority. Companies have been facing issues in data backup and recovery. They have to seek out a provider that saves multiple copies of their data while ensuring their privacy. It is also important that in case the physical copies of data are harmed or destroyed that there be a backup present so the company would not come to a halt.

Cloud Computing

COVID-19 has resurrected many technological advances and made them essential for running a business. Consequently, there has been a major surge in the adoption of cloud computing.

Cloud Computing or “The Cloud” offers faster modernization, flexible resources, and economies of scale. According to Gartner, global spending on cloud services will reach $260bn this year up from $219.6bn and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down (Ranger, n.d.). This just shows how people prefer moving their load on the cloud rather than keeping physical copies.

It is becoming a popular option due to multiple reasons, one of its appealing factors is the expandability at the push of the button and you can access data from any device at home. Furthermore, there are providers present that ensure your data is safe and backed up plus they have reasonable packages which makes it cost effective as well.

However, there are some concerns still present such as security, privacy, management, performance and access speed.

Integrations and Updates

In order to stay relevant in such a competitive market, companies need to constantly update and improve their processes. This sometimes means they need to upgrade their technology and software to keep up or excel their competitors.

If every time an upgrade was needed, the company started from the bottom, it would be extremely costly and take a lot of precious time as well as effort. Thus, companies build upon software and tweak it as necessary. Instead of starting from scratch, new tools are integrated with existing legacy technology.

This however has its drawbacks, if the integration is not done properly, there can be dire consequences and multiple hiccups since the final product gets affected.

Artificial Intelligence

It has been a decade since first heard of AI developments and its capabilities, but now AI has become part of the mainstream world. Their facial recognition and language translators in the most trivial tech such as smartphones, Assistants like Siri and Alexa have become part of the new norm.

It was only a question of when AI would join the business world. In the pandemic, AI has become an option for multiple businesses. Companies which are availing this option are automating multiple processes and improving their employee and customer experience. This in turn will free up skilled professionals from tedious tasks and they can focus on creativity and innovation.

The Verdict

The pandemic ushered in a new era, it pushed us to the limits and provided us with mind boggling challenges that often left us flabbergasted. In the beginning, economies were plummeting because of their inability to adapt to the new circumstances but technology helped them from sinking any further.

Multiple technology advances are what made work from home possible otherwise industries would have become stagnant and suffered even major losses. We are all still in the learning face and adapting to this new world. In order to fully understand where we stand we need more time to acclimatize and learn.

At the moment, the demand is more than the supply but technological companies are now developing according to the, “work from home”, situation. They are keeping in mind the needs of their consumers and adjusting their intentions likewise.

This article was just an overview of the tech issue that has risen. The most vital issue however is data protection. Companies need to figure how to effectively protect sensitive information from these malicious attacks while still evolving.
