World’s First LoRa SoC : STMicro STM32WLE5

STMicroelectronics has announced the world’s first LoRa SoC (system-on-chip) for connecting smart devices to the Internet of Things (IoT) using long-distance wireless connections.

The STM32WLE5 SoC lets product developers create devices such as remote environmental sensors, meters, trackers, and process controllers that help efficiently manage energy and resources. This is Based on an Arm® Cortex®‐M4 core running at 48 MHz, and a sub-GHz radio based-on Semtech SX126x, the STM32WLE5 microcontroller is an open platform supporting LoRa, (G)FSK, (G)MSK and BPSK modulations.

The SoC combines ST’s proven skills in ultra-low-power STM32 microcontroller design with a LoRa-compliant radio in one single-die and easy-to-use device. With multiple ST patents pending, namely for radio Power Management Architecture, the STM32WLE5 will ensure unique performance. ST’s LoRaWAN software for wireless network communications has passed all regional certifications for use worldwide.

STM32WLE5 users are supported by ST’s rolling 10-year longevity commitment for industrial products.

The security side of the design includes AES 128- and 256-bit acceleration, a true hardware random number generator, private key accelerator, and a 96-bit ID unique to each chip. Connectivity includes two SPIs, three I2Cs, one ultra-low-power UART, two USART, seven 16- and 32-bit timers, one each of analogue to digital and digital to analogue converters (ADC and DAC) at a 12-bit resolution, an on-board temperature sensor, and two ULP comparators, plus up to 43 general-purpose input/outputs (GPIOs).

The STM32WLE5 is available in a 5mm x 5mm UFBGA73 package. It is fully integrated into the market-proven STM32 ecosystem, including STM32Cube software support, as well as a LoRaWAN stack certified for all regions and available in source-code format.
