ROCK Pi X : Overview

ROCK Pi X is the first X86 SBC(Single Board Computer) by Radxa. The board also shares the same footprint as the Raspberry Pi, and apart from the Intel processor shares a lot of similarities with Radxa’s Rock Pi 4, based around the Rockchip RK3399, which they released at the tail end of last year. Interestingly of course, because of the Intel processor, the new Rock Pi X board will be able run Windows 10 and Linux distributions. The ROCK Pi X is started after the Radxa team get a lot of inquiries from the users if the ROCK Pi 4 can run Windows.

ROCK Pi X features an Intel Cherry Trail quad core processor Z8300, 64bit dual channel 1866Mb/s LPDDR3, up to 4K@30 HDMI, MIPI DSI, eDP, MIPI CSI, 3.5mm jack with mic, 802.11 ac WIFI, Bluetooth 4.2, USB Port, GbE LAN, 40-pin color expansion header, RTC. Also, ROCK Pi X supports USB PD and QC powering.

There isn’t any news on availability quite yet, but the Rock Pi X Model A will ship priced at $39 for the 1GB model, $49 for the 2GB model, or $65 for the 4GB model. While the Model B, with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support, will ship at $49 for the 1GB model, $59 for the 2GB model, or $75 for the 4GB model which represents the top end specification available.

Although if you opt for the cheapest model, with only 1GB of RAM, you’ll be restricted to running Windows in 32-bit mode as the 64-bit edition requires a minimum of 2GB of RAM.

The board is a bit more expensive than Atomic Pi board, especially considering the lack of internal storage, but it will be easier to use, and it’s also a much smaller board. Since it’s an Intel board, the usual operating systems such as Windows 10, Ubuntu 18.04 and other Linux distributions, and Android should work out of the box as early issues such as the lack of HDMI audio on Intel Bay Trail/Cherry Trail processors were fixed a few years ago.
